Aftercare advice for any saddle

DO...

When storing your saddle, it is important that nothing digs into the panel/flocking as this can distort the shape and cause 'gaps' in the flocking, resulting in uneven pressure being dispersed onto the horses back. I always recommend storing a saddle on either a Stubbs slip, Stubbs saddle mate or a pole (best option).

These types of saddle stands/racks will leave imprints on the saddle panels. Do not panic if this is how you normally store your saddle... By placing/taping an old pillow over the top of the stand you will be protecting the saddle from future damage. Other things you can use which are found in most tack rooms are; several old numnahs, a thick pad or some travel boots. Foam pipe should be avoided too as it can still cause indents.

It is good to get into a habit of checking your saddles over every now and again to make sure it is safe for you and your horse. These are some good things to look out for:

  • The stirrup bars should be fixed and not move.
  • Your stirrup leathers should be the same length/even, there should be no excessive wear and the stitching should be in good condition.
  • The girth straps should show no signs of excessive wear or stretching, look out for worn stitching as this will need to be replaced.
  • If your horse has a fall or you drop the saddle and suspect the tree may be broken, please get in touch to have it fully checked over.

Cleaning

Whilst not many of us enjoy cleaning our tack, it is important that we look after our leather to ensure it is kept soft and supple. I recommend a deep clean every month to prevent grease building up. Here are my top tips to keep your leather gleaming:

  • Clean with hot water and a cloth, I mix the water with Ecover washing up liquid to gently lift dirt and grease. Don't be afraid to use a soft toothbrush to get into all the nooks and crannies.
  • Avoid saddle soap at all costs! 99% of saddle soaps contains glycerine which builds up on the saddle and causes a greasy film to stay on the saddle. Ever wonder what those tiny greasy blobs are? That's glycerine build up!
  • After cleaning the saddle and stripping it of oils, it is important to condition the leather. There are many products on the market, a good conditioner will contain natural ingredients and protects the leather and stitching. I recommend using Balmoral products or Duckswax.
